State Representative Spencer Collier, a member of the Alabama House of
Representatives and a former State Trooper, will now serve as Director of
the Department of Homeland Security.
Collier, a two-term legislator from Irvington, Alabama in Mobile County,
was first elected to the Alabama House in 2002 and subsequently reelected in
2006 and 2010. While serving in the House, he was a member of the Public
Safety and Judiciary Committees. He is currently Director of Economic and
Community Development for the City of Bayou La Batre where he is responsible
for coordinating disaster and economic recovery efforts following the recent
British Petroleum Deepwater Horizon disaster. He also serves on the
Executive Committee of the Coastal Recovery Commission helping to formulate
Alabama’s strategy for economic recovery following the BP disaster.
Collier worked as a State Trooper in the Alabama Department of Public
Safety for 10 years in both the Highway Patrol and Administrative Divisions.
He also worked in the Department’s Special Operations Unit and served as
spokesperson for the Department following hurricanes Ivan and Katrina.
Collier was recognized by Governor Bob Riley for heroism and bravery
beyond the call of duty following a joint rescue operation in conjunction
with the Alabama Department of Marine Resources in which 30 people were
saved from rising floodwaters in south Mobile County during Hurricane
Katrina.
Collier received a Bachelors Degree from Troy University in Criminal
Justice and is a graduate of the Alabama Criminal Justice Training Center.
